BIO

Spencer Stout

Spencer Stout brings an unconventional background to his writing, shaped by a career in science, a lifelong curiosity about the natural world, and a deep appreciation for the complexities of human experience.

Trained as a geologist and marine scientist, Spencer has spent much of his professional life exploring, researching, and solving problems. His work has included scientific research with the U.S. Geological Survey, marine and environmental studies, and consulting across a range of scientific and technical disciplines. That career has given him a particular way of looking at the world—one grounded in observation, curiosity, and an understanding that the most interesting answers are rarely the simplest ones.

Outside his scientific career, Spencer has devoted years to coaching and mentoring others. For more than a decade, he coached middle school cross-country and track, helping young athletes discover confidence, resilience, and abilities they didn't know they possessed. Today, he continues that work as a CrossFit coach and personal trainer. Through coaching, he has witnessed firsthand how people respond to adversity, find strength in unexpected places, and are shaped by the encouragement and relationships around them.

His debut novel represents a different kind of exploration. Although a work of fiction, it draws deeply from personal experience, bringing emotional honesty and lived perspective to an imagined story. Writing has allowed Spencer to examine experiences, relationships, and questions that don't always lend themselves to easy explanations.

The result is fiction informed by a life spent studying both the physical world and the people who inhabit it.
